How did you first get involved with independent education?

I have always known I wanted to do something in education because I was so inspired watching my mother, who was an educator for 35 years. I was an education minor in college and received my professional certification in education. I entered the world of independent education when Chris Bartlett, then the director of admission at Proctor Academy (NH), called because the school had been looking for someone who could work in the admission office and coach the girls’ ice hockey team. I have loved every minute of working in independent school education and am very excited to have the opportunity to give back to the profession through my new role at The Enrollment Management Association!

What was your first impression of The Enrollment Management Association?

Since working at a member school (Proctor Academy), I have always greatly appreciated the work that has been done to help enrollment managers reach their potential and enroll great students. I still remember going to my first Annual Meeting years ago and that, along with all of the resources offered by the organization, helped me continue to grow professionally and serve my school. This was the organization I always turned to as an admission professional when I needed information for board reports, update on trends, data, professional development, etc., along with using the SSAT as our way of making crucial admission decisions about our applicants.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

When I am not working I really enjoy getting outside, being active, and traveling. Some of my favorite activities include running, hiking, yoga, snowboarding, and playing hockey. Growing up with a lot of music in the house, I am also a big fan of Broadway musicals.

How did you first get involved with independent education?

I went to camp at Culver Academies (IN) for seven summers, and fell in love with it. After college, I taught sailing in the summer camp and thought it would be amazing to be there all year. Luckily a position in the admission office was open, and I applied. Since then, I’ve worked at Le Mans Academy (IN), Stevenson School (CA), Asheville College in the UK, University of Maryland University College Europe, and the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA program.

What was your first impression of The Enrollment Management Association?

In 1999, Culver sent me to the Annual Meeting and enrolled me in the Admission Training Institute. This was a great introduction and first impression. I was excited to learn about the admission funnel, application process, etc. My experience since then has continued to be positive. I believe the name change will have a positive impact—as an admission professional, I didn’t take advantage of all the tools that The Association had to offer. With new branding making us more visible as an enrollment management one-stop-shop, it’s a great opportunity to educate admission and enrollment professionals about all the incredible resources at their fingertips.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

My two years in Turkey would be a good example of how I use my time outside of work: while there, I helped spearhead an international fundraising campaign called 5K4Refugees, raising money for the basic needs of refugees in Turkey, which raised over 45,000 Turkish Lira. I was on the board of the American Military Spouse Organization. As an occasional competitive runner, I completed a 22-mile ultra-trail marathon in Cappadocia, Turkey in late 2015, and I ran a 10K in Antalya twice. My family and I are natural explorers and traveled the entire western and southwestern coast of Turkey.
