Turning the Tide: Inspiring Concern for Others and the Common Good through College Admissions

Turning the Tide: Inspiring Concern for Others and the Common Good through College Admissions

wiht Whitney Soule and Matt McGann

In January, the Harvard Graduate School of Education published the much talked about Turning the Tide report, signed by admission deans and leaders at top colleges across the country. This call to action, spurred by the Making Caring Common project, is designed to "reshape the college admission process." Recommendations are focused on promoting greater ethical engagement among aspiring students, reducing excessive achievement pressure, and leveling the playing field for economically disadvantaged students. Bowdoin College is a signer of the report and supporter of the initiative. In this presentation, Whitney explains Turning the Tide, describes the negative reactions to it, and explores the important question, "where does the college admission industry go from here?"
