Keynote: Understanding Bias in Admission
Erica Pernell, Dean of Diversity & Inclusion, Noble and Greenough School (MA)
Through stories, simulations, and multimedia resources, this interactive session aims to ask and answer the following questions: What roles do our personal multicultural identities play in our work as admission professionals? How can cultural competency help us work toward excellence in our admissions results? How can systems be built and used to work against bias in the admissions process? Erica will provide some background theory and give participants the tools to apply theory to their practice.
About Erica: Erica joined Nobles in 2012 as a member of the science faculty. Before coming to Nobles, she was the director of the UMass-Boston Upward Bound program, supporting first-generation college bound students from Boston in their efforts to make it to university. She grew up in Plainville, CT and attended UConn, where she played softball while earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry and curriculum and instruction with a focus on multicultural education and critical pedagogy.
